Teaching Media Literacy to Younger Age Students

As I embark on writing curriculum for teaching about Media Literacy and the creation of social media, I have encountered many challenges and issues.

  • How to simplify some of the marketing strategies concepts.
  • How to explain or identify understand subtext and text
  • How to create a counter positive media message

My bigest thought so far is to consider Media Literacy in terms of teaching kids literacy: reading, writing, imagery, audio, and video. to encourage students to use what they have in their environment as deconstruction pieces, inclouding story books, such as A Boy, a Dog, a Frog, and a Friend (Boy, Dog, Frog) - Hardcover (Jun 2, 2003) by Mercer Mayer and Marianna Mayer.

Scratch, programming software for kids, can be used in two ways for this. Teachers can pre-create scratch activities for teaching students about media literacy concepts using media, storytelling, and interactivity. Once students become familair with the format they can then use Scratch to complete stories, create interactive or non-interactive media.
